If you're planning a trip to Mexico, you'll need to know about Mexico's new policies for accepting U.S. currency. Here are a few of the major changes that could affect you:
- Airport ticket counters in Mexico no longer accept U.S. currency. You can pay with Mexican pesos, a credit card or traveler's checks.
- Businesses in Mexico can only accept up to $100 USD per transaction, and certain businesses may not accept U.S. currency at all.
- Each traveler can only exchange up to $1,500 USD for Mexican pesos per month.
Here's what we recommend:
- Bring a credit card or traveler's checks. You can also use your debit or bank card to withdraw pesos from ATMs in Mexico.
- If you need to exchange U.S. currency for pesos, do it either before you arrive or once you're there at the airport, bank or hotel (check with your hotel first).
